There have been many examples of engineering throughout history, ranging from ancient monuments all the way to modern technology. Ancient Egyptians, for example, credit Imhotep with building a step pyramid in Saqqara. Imhotep's step pyramid was completed in the third millennium BC, and the Egyptians later deified him after his death. This ancient Egyptian engineer may be familiar to you, but did know that he was also an Egyptian deified god.

Ancient engineering monuments

Many monuments of ancient engineering are evidence of the human abilities. Ancient Egyptian civil and military engineers can be seen in the pyramids of Egypt, ziggurats from Mesopotamia, as well as Pharos of Alexandria. Acropolis in India and Indus Valley are just two examples of ancient engineering landmarks. Monuments like the Colosseum and Acropolis were left by ancient Roman and Greek engineers. Mayan civil engineers designed impressive structures, including the drainage and aqueduct systems at Teotihuacan. Al-Jazari was a Turkish engineering monument. It featured five water pumps that were used by the Artuqid dynasty's kings. Other engineers such as Mechanics invented the concepts of escapement mechanisms and gears.

In 1917, the United States government seized control of all radio stations. The United States argued that the radio spectrum was far too valuable to let go. This was the start of a new era in communication technology. Today, you can see the history of electricity in New York City and elsewhere.

Simplex communication was possible with radios in the early 1900s. People would send messages by sending Morse Code, which is similar to the code that was used for writing. This is the most famous government initiative, but there are many others. Government control of power and communication was the norm outside of the USA. The technological advancements in electrical engineering made it clear to engineers how important it was to continue their work.
